Copa America 2024: Group D Preview
Finishing off with Group D – which contains Colombia and Brazil. Both teams mentioned should really fancy their chances of going far in the tournament – Brazil are priced 3.25 to win the tournament, and Colombia also quite short at 11.0
Group D:
- Brazil
- Colombia
- Paraguay
- Costa Rica
Brazil
- Brazil might come into this tournament seeking vengeance – they were defeated by Argentina on home turf in the 2021 Copa America Final, the first time they have ever failed to lift the trophy when being the host nation.
- Brazil are currently languishing in 6th place for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, seemingly past their golden generation. They lost three times against Argentina, Uruguay and Colombia – the other three realistic contenders for the trophy, which isn’t a good sign at all.
- Vinicius Junior, Rodrygo and Raphinha are set to start up front in an extremely fluid front three. Brazil seem set to go without any central striker.
- Premier League trio Joao Gomes (Wolves), Bruno Guimaraes (Newcastle) and Lucas Paqueta (West Ham) are set to start in midfield. The defence is harder to predict, as is the goalkeeper.
Colombia
- Colombia will have a tough run to the final, but there certainly can be considered dark horses to lift the trophy for the second time in their history.
- Colombia were eliminated in the semi-final at the 2021 edition, and failed to qualify for the 2022 World Cup, which was a real disappointment.
- They currently sit third in the 2026 World Cup Qualifiers, undefeated in their six games.
- Luis Diaz shared the golden boot with Lionel Messi in the previous Copa America. He will once again have to step up and lead his national side from the front.
- Jefferson Lerma will have a crucial role in midfield, although he was plagued by injuries towards the end of the domestic season.
- Crystal Palace teammate David Munoz impressed in his 6-month spell in England, a crucial part of the Eagles reversing their fortunes. His pace and energy will be a real bonus for Colombia – he notably scored against Spain in a friendly at the West Ham Stadium back in March.
Paraguay
- Paraguay are seventh of 10 teams vying for World Cup qualification, although they have scored just one goal in their six games so far.
- That being said, they have also conceded just three goals. Four of their games finished 1-0, and the other two were 0-0.
- Paraguay’s poor goalscoring record might seem unusual given that they have Premier League stars Almiron and Enciso in their ranks.
Costa Rica
- Costa Rica are massive outsiders to qualify from Group D, equally priced at 4/1 alongside Paraguay to qualify.
- Recently put together 4-0 and 3-0 wins against St Kitts and Nevis and Grenada respectively in the North American World Cup qualifiers.
- 37-year-old Keylor Navas featured in just four games domestically this season, although is still on the books of PSG.
